Wide Angle » Community Management: Marketing Discipline of the Future?.

This is a great article, read it if you have time. I am going to recap and make a few comments on the topic of discussion: marketing of the future.

I think the author hits the nail on the head when they explain that products are becoming secondary to the community surrounding them. I’ll give Starbucks as an example. I am writing this post while drinking some coffee at Starbucks…I didn’t come to Starbucks for the coffee ( the primary product of Starbucks), I came for the community of Starbucks, the atmosphere, and for a good place to work. I use to come to Starbucks for coffee because that’s why anyone would go to a coffee shop…but times are changing.

The article describes Nike’s approach to the community aspect of their business. This is the revolution of which we are in the midst. Social social social…Facebook is the 2nd most visited site in the nation…does your business have a Facebook presence?…if not you could be missing out on customers.

For you small business owners…how are your customers finding out about you, your product, how amazing it is, any discounts you have? You have to communicate those things to your customers…and how are you going to do that? Where do your customers spend their time? Statistics say they are spending it on social networks…is your business on social networks like Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Ping, Myspace, etc?

Or is it all just too much to manage? It most certainly is a lot to manage…but you know you have to do it to succeed in this age.

Take it one step at a time and breath. There are also a ton of resources to help you and people that are willing. Hopefully I can be one of those. I have resources that you can look into on my blog and I tweet information that is aimed at small businesses to help them market on the internet.
